CAMBODIA - United World Schools (UWS)
United World Schools creates educational opportunities for children living in the world’s poorest regions. The organization is driven by their global mission to help reach children that do not receive even the most basic education; “teaching the unreached’’ is their slogan. UWS builds schools and supports communities by providing a free basic education for children who would otherwise go without. German Swiss International School has been the partner school and sole supporter of Rock School, a school with 200 students in Ratanakiri Province, Cambodia, for the past four years.
This trip has proven to be a priceless experience for last year’s students, who recall the joy and pride of being able to empower young children by teaching them essential life skills, such as language and basic arithmetic. All agree this trip is one of the most valuable, rewarding and unforgettable Discovery Weeks they have ever had. The trip begins on Saturday afternoon, and this year we will fly to Siem Reap where we will spend the first night. On Sunday afternoon we head to Banlung and begin our teaching preparations. This involves lesson planning and the purchase of teaching materials in the market. We set off for Rock School on Monday afternoon, travelling by jeep and river canoe. Upon arrival we set up our hammocks and prepare our classrooms. For the next four days we will be staying in the village and GSIS students will be running the morning classes, teaching sports and afternoon activities/skills. We have the opportunity to experience the classic, Cambodian countryside lifestyle - sleeping in hammocks in the school and enjoying refreshing baths in the river. We return to Siem Reap on Friday and before our evening departure on Saturday we will do a little more sightseeing in Angkor Wat. Students who sign up for this trip will be helping with some fundraising and engage in lesson preparation before our departure. |
