FUJIAN, China
This trip offers a very different Discovery Week experience, and an exciting and fascinating insight to the Hongkeng Tulou Cluster in Southern Fujian. Situated in beautiful countryside, and listed as a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO, students will stay in the ancient Tulou Cluster of Hongkeng, an authentic living tulou, multi-storied, Feng Shui aligned, rammed earth fortress.
For three days, students will explore the area by bike and on foot, meet local people and take part in a range of different challenges and activities including mapmaking, Tai Qi, and constructing a mud Tulou replica. Additionally, a journalism project based on aspects of life in the Hongkeng Tulou Cluster will give students the opportunity to talk to local inhabitants about their lives and experiences. Returning to Xiamen for the last day, we will explore the Nanputou Temple and the Shapowei Art Centre. Leaders: Deborah Crouch
