Malaysia - Rainforest to Reef
An engaging ecological journey to Tioman Island
Tioman Island is a protected marine park located in one of the most outstanding areas of marine biodiversity in the world. This makes Tioman the ideal retreat for immersing students in local culture, conservation & environmental education – forming key links to the curriculum. Under the guidance of qualified and experienced team of Biologists, Geographers and Outdoor Educators, students are taken on an inspiring journey through different tropical ecosystems and are introduced to the island’s incredible flora and fauna.
Students will stay at an education center, based at Melina Beach Resort, an eco-resort nestled between the rainforest and the seashore, with its own private beach and fringing coral reef. We will trek through Tioman’s luxuriant rainforest, explore the diverse rocky seashore & snorkel on the pristine coral reefs. At high tide we are also able to snorkel through a flourishing mangrove – a unique experience for students as they weave in & out of the roots, whilst learning all about this fascinating, but delicate ecosystem. We will also conduct an International Coastal Cleanup along one of the stretches of beach. Students will collect any trash, separate it into different categories, and record down the results. We will then submit this data to an international database (Ocean Conservancy) where all this information is collated in a bid to reduce this form of pollution in the future. Perhaps the most rewarding part of the trip is our visit to the Rohingya Refugee School. This project aims to provide primary education for children from Rohingya refugee communities protected under the United Nations. We will get the chance to interact with the students, conducting fun & educational activities that we will design before the trip. Our visits are always an invaluable experience for the Rohingya students, as it helps them develop necessary social & life skills to help them progress into further education or work. This is always a very successful & rewarding activity for all involved! Leader: Frau Nicolaus
