TIOMAN ISLAND, Malaysia
This exciting trip offers students the opportunity to visit coastal Malaysia and learn about the ecology and fragility of various ecosystems through a range of activities led by a team of well-qualified instructors.
On arrival in Singapore the students will travel to the Sedili Resort on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia which boasts an incredible rocky, Triassic-Era coastline and very close to one of the last remaining pockets of primary rainforest in southern Peninsular Malaysia. Low tide will reveal a spectacular study area, with explorations yielding exciting finds such as anemones, octopus, sea snakes and a wide array of gastropods. A Water Low-Ropes course is located above a shallow pond at the resort where team-building workshops will be held. Students have a fantastic time navigating the physical challenges of the course whilst working with their fellow team members to accomplish a common goal! Tioman Island, situated off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, is a short boat ride away and is located in one of the most outstanding areas of marine biodiversity in the world. A protected marine park, Tioman is the ideal retreat for immersing students in outdoor environmental education. Under the guidance of qualified and experienced staff, students are taken on an inspiring journey through different tropical ecosystems, and introduced to the island's fascinating flora and fauna. Groups will stay at our very own education centre, based at Melina Beach Resort, an eco-resort nestled between the rainforest and the seashore, with its own private beach and fringing coral reef. Through snorkelling & kayaking, students can get up close to some of the world’s most diverse marine species and discover how to assess the health of the reef under the guidance of our EFT Biologists. In small groups, students will be able to discover the island in a different light by kayaking to various locations under guidance from our experts. A half-day spent learning about local Malay culture will see students use traditional materials and techniques to design their own Batik painting and learn how to play Sepak Takraw, one of South East Asia’s most popular sports, this game is similar to volleyball but using a rattan ball and no use of hands is allowed. One of Tioman’s most famous attractions, the Tekek-Juara trek takes students from coast to coast exploring the deepest parts of the island’s jungle. Renowned amongst botanists and zoologists alike for its vast array of plant and animal biodiversity, our biologists will inspire students as they offer an insight into their knowledge of the area’s rich natural history. The trek ends with a dip in one of the rainforest’s many hidden waterfalls, giving everyone a chance to cool down and immerse themselves entirely in Tioman’s natural beauty. Leader: TBC
